Ball gown blues

My year 12 ball was over 4 years ago. This was what I wore-

If you haven't guessed already, I'm the one in the red. This photo was taken about 2 weeks before my 18th birthday. Like most of the dresses worn at my ball, the dress was purchased from Strange Love in Perth (now known as 'Dana Mathers'). I really loved it and I still do to this day. I think it matched my personality perfectly at the time, especially the fact that I decided to wear a bow in my hair instead of the fascinator I brought a few weeks prior.

But if I was able to go back in time and do it again I would probably wear this little number-

So adorable and chic. I'm in love with the detailing at the top. The flower is just too cute and is a perfect touch. I think its really interesting how our tastes in fashion can change over time. I think that as we grow, so too does our style.

What did you wear to your ball?

migraine pick me ups

I haven't been well all week. I've been suffering from chronic migraines that seem to hit me in full force, go away for a while, and then strike again. The migraines make my eyes so painful that I can't move them. I spent most of the week (including Australia day) lying in bed feeling sorry for myself.

That being said, I was feeling ok on Thursday so I took the opportunity to get out the house and buy some cute things that were on my list-

polka dot blouse- Dangerfeild
skirt- Jacequi E
vintage necklace- Broken Doll
treble clef brooch- Lovisa
tapestry handbag- Sportsgirl

I think I'm feeling a bit better after all those purchases.

Black Swan + Oscar season

Listening to: Joanna Newsom
Watching: The L word
Reading: Catch 22

Well after months of anticipation I finally got to watch Black Swan. Can I start by saying that Darren Aronofsky is nothing short of a genius? I have honestly not felt this way after seeing a film since I watched Requiem for a Dream (my favorite movie which was also directed by Darren). He has the amazing ability to draw the viewer in, make them feel every emotion portrayed through the characters and experience the atmosphere of the story that you can almost smell it.

Darren's films usually revolve around the same subject of an emotional and physically damaging obsession, as seen in Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler. He continues with this theme in Black Swan with Nina (played to perfection by the divine Natalie Portman) the prima ballerina who tries to overcome her mental anguish and slow insanity to perfect the role of the Black Swan in Swan Lake.

Visually this film can be dark, gritty and truly uncomfortable at times, yet immaculately beautiful at other times. The symbolism is fantastic and is always a treat to see. And Natalie Portman! Where do I start! Her performance is truly something of brilliance as she portrays a fragile woman who's obsession on perfection eventually creates her downfall. You really feel for her character in the film, so virginal, so pure yet so tortured by her fears and her mental conflict. And seeing her as the black swan is enchanting as well as frightening.

It is now in my personal top 3 favorite movies of all time. I insist that you all see it.

.

So its that time of the year again- Oscar Season. Some of you may groan in apathy but I am happy to admit that I am a self proclaimed Oscars junkie. I am so happy about the Oscar nominations this year. I found the last few years to be a bit disappointing and pretentious but thankfully 2010/11 has been a fantastic year for enriching films. I'm very confident that Natalie Portman will win best actress, which will probably result in the neighbours hearing me scream with delight (I hope that doesn't sound suss...). As for best actor, my money is for the wonderful Colin Firth to win (I'm seeing The Kings Speech on Thursday), but I would love nothing more than to see the gorgeous James Franco take away the gong for his role in 127 Hours-

I guess you could say that my opinion would seem very bias since the movie hasn't been released in Australia yet, but you can see from the previews of this film why James is nominated, as well as the film being nominated for Best Picture. I swear my heart stopped beating while watching this trailer-

the earth laughs in flowers

Swoon! I love love LOVE my new necklace. You may remember it from my previous post on statement necklaces? Well, it turns out Urban Records in Leederville stock them! This saves me having to wait for 2 weeks when ordering online. I've received so many compliments on my new purchase this week, which is always nice. My collection of statement necklaces is starting to come together slowly.

In other news I found this gem of a dress yesterday at work-

I've been looking everywhere for a good 90's floral dress. I haven't had any luck finding one that suits my shape as well as my budget. This dress ticks both boxes.

And how much was it you ask?

.

$6 bucks that's how much!

*sigh* I do love my job. Its going to be really sad when I find full time work.

Speaking of full time work, tomorrow I have an interview for Dick Smith electronics. Wish me luck yall!

p.s: This is a photo of Ernie. Hes a corella cockatoo and recently turned 2 last November. I hand reared him when he was a baby. He was watching me take photos of myself so I thought I'd let him join in. His feathers are puffed up because he feels threatened by the camera.

Un-bow-lievable!

Very very pleased at the moment. I just received my package from the wonderfully talented Janine Basil who makes the most beautiful handmade retro inspired hats, fascinators and headbands. You can visit her store here- http://www.etsy.com/shop/janinebasil?ref=pr_shop

I purchased the 'Ruby red glitter bow headband' which is modelled in this photo by the lovely Janine Basil herself-

When I received it at my doorstep, my jaw dropped. I honestly must say that the headband was even more beautiful in real life

I can't wait for the chance to wear this out. I think its not something to wear as an everyday accessory, but I'll defiantly be wearing it at the next special occasion coming up. I think I might wear this Sunday for my best friend's birthday lunch perhaps? who knows.

I've also got my eye on a few more etiquette items that Janine has hand crafted-

This rhinestone sparrow hat was recently featured on my blog-

I would no doubt wear this Burlesque Queen of Hearts crown as a statement piece for my birthday-

Don't forget to check out Janine's etsy store - http://www.etsy.com/shop/janinebasil?ref=pr_shop

There are so many beautiful fascinators and headbands that you wont know where to start!

statement necklaces

Listening to: Traveling Wilburys
Watching: The L word
Reading: The Bronze Horseman

Hi friends!

Recently I've realised that I tend to spend my dosh on a whole lot of dresses, but I seem to forget about something just as important as the outfit- accessorising. I'm not sure if you have that problem too?
That being the case, I've made the decision to try to buy less clothing and invest in some key pieces to accessorise with my current dresses.

Here's a few statement necklaces that I'm currently keeping my eye on:

The 'Bloody Victorian' fabric rosette necklace by StudioElenus (etsy)

'A Rose is a Rose Necklace' by Mama's Little Babies (etsy)

The 'The Holes in History' vintage lace ribbon bow necklace by Gala Curious

'Behind that curtain' necklace by Lola & Bailey in 'new mod art'

'Kitschy Cuckoo Clock' necklace by Miss Bluebird Creations (etsy)

Statement Bib Necklace by myfaunaflora (etsy)

I must, I MUST resist temptation and save my pennies for LA in Nov!

I think the smart thing for me to do would be buying a book on budgeting instead of expensive statement necklaces?...

How do people manage to save these days when etsy exists?!
